What was the path that led to a career in the justice system?
I was attending college, looking at the law as a career. I changed schools and that’s when my mom encouraged me to apply with our local county government. The options were animal control, Medicare, or the clerk of the court. Luckily, I got the job with the clerk of the court!
What has been a major challenge in the court system?
For me, I’ve always seen technology as a challenge. The courts have a history of not adapting quickly, so by the time we got around to adopting new systems, technology had moved past us. The obvious exception was during the pandemic; the courts embraced the technology and altered practices/processes overnight.
Which work successes makes you the most proud?
Our court in Pima County has been recognized throughout Arizona for innovative programs. I’m also proud of the teams I have been a part of. The staff at our court are amazing and they work tirelessly to support the judicial system and the public they serve.
How has your NACM membership impacted and/or influenced your career?
I love telling the story of my NACM mentor, Marcus Reikensmeyer. I truly felt that through NACM, I hit the mentor lottery! He encouraged me throughout my career and to become a part of NACM. Once I started serving on the committees and meeting other court professionals all over the world, I found so many other individuals I could ask for guidance and assistance. Ultimately, it’s provided me with lifelong friendships.
What advice would you give to an Early Career Professional?
The courts are a tremendous place to work. Our mission is to ensure fair and impartial justice, which is a wonderful cause. I know that some Early Career Professionals are looking for that “next thing,” but I encourage them to stop and take a look at the variety of opportunities to learn new things within the court system. I took a handful of lateral positions, which ultimately gave me the foundation to advance.
How do you unwind after a long day/week?
I love reading books, mostly science fiction/fantasy. The real world is real enough, so it’s a fun escape into a land where magic occurs.
What is a surprising fun fact?
I was on a game show in the 90s, Supermarket Sweep. I didn’t win but I came close.
